It is important to clarify that Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae is not a plant pathogen; it is a bacterium responsible for the disease known as swine erysipelas. This zoonotic agent is a significant concern for veterinary medicine and animal husbandry, capable of causing severe economic losses in pig farming worldwide.
The causative agent is a non-spore-forming, Gram-positive rod. It is highly resilient in the environment, demonstrating the ability to persist in soil, manure, and carcasses for several months. For agronomists, this is critical because infected manure used as fertilizer without proper treatment can become a vector for re-infection within an agricultural ecosystem.
Clinical signs in susceptible animals typically include sudden high fever, red skin patches (often diamond-shaped), and severe systemic inflammation. If left untreated, the disease can lead to septicemia, endocarditis, and polyarthritis, resulting in high mortality rates, particularly in piglets and young fattening animals.
The development and spread of the infection are favored by warm, humid environmental conditions. Transmission occurs through ingestion of contaminated feed or water, through skin abrasions, and via vectors such as biting insects. The bacterium is shed in the feces, urine, and saliva of infected animals, creating a reservoir that can contaminate the farm environment.
Effective control measures focus on preventive biosecurity. These include the routine vaccination of susceptible herds, rigorous hygiene protocols for waste management, and the restriction of animal movement between facilities. Proper composting of manure is essential to destroy the pathogen before its application to agricultural lands, ensuring overall farm safety.
