Flavobacteriosis is a destructive bacterial disease caused by members of the Flavobacteriales order. These microorganisms are Gram-negative aerobic bacteria capable of actively breaking down plant tissues, leading to decay and necrosis. The disease is characterized by a high rate of spread when environmental conditions are favorable for pathogen development.

This type of pathogen affects a wide range of agricultural crops, including vegetables, fruit trees, and various field crops. Species grown in high-humidity conditions or greenhouses are particularly susceptible to bacterial invasion. The infection typically enters the plant through natural openings, such as stomata, or through mechanical wounds caused by pests or cultural practices.

The primary symptoms of flavobacteriosis include water-soaked spots on leaves, stems, and fruits, which eventually darken. In the affected areas, softening of tissues is frequently observed, often accompanied by an unpleasant odor. In cases of severe vascular infection, the plant wilts rapidly and dies due to the obstruction of vascular bundles by bacterial masses.

The development of the disease is closely linked to high relative humidity (above 80%) and moderately high temperatures ranging from 20 to 28°C. The presence of free moisture is a critical factor, as it facilitates the movement of bacteria across the plant surface. The infection can also be transmitted through contaminated soil, poor-quality seed material, and infected crop debris left in the field.

To prevent the spread of flavobacteriosis, integrated protection measures are essential:

  • Use only certified, pathogen-free, and treated seeds.
  • Follow strict crop rotation and remove all plant residues from the field.
  • Maintain optimal humidity levels in greenhouses through proper ventilation.
  • Apply biological control agents or approved bactericides at the first signs of infection.
  • Disinfect agricultural tools regularly to prevent the mechanical transmission of the pathogen.
