Description
Flexibacteriosis is a complex of plant diseases caused by bacteria belonging to the Flexibacteriaceae family. These organisms are distinguished by their gliding motility, which allows them to migrate across plant surfaces and efficiently colonize healthy tissues. The disease is primarily manifested as bacterial soft rot, causing rapid disintegration of plant structures.
The pathogen affects a wide range of agricultural crops, particularly those with high moisture content such as leafy vegetables, potatoes, and various root crops. The bacteria typically gain entry into the host through natural openings like stomata or through mechanical wounds caused by harvesting, insect feeding, or severe weather conditions like hail.
Early symptoms include localized water-soaked lesions that rapidly expand and turn necrotic. As the infection progresses, the internal tissues turn into a soft, mushy mass, often accompanied by a pungent odor due to the enzymatic breakdown of the plant cell walls. In severe cases, the entire stem may collapse, leading to the total death of the plant.
Optimal conditions for the development of Flexibacteriosis include high relative humidity (above 85%) and moderate to warm temperatures. Once established in a field or storage facility, the pathogen spreads rapidly via water splashes during irrigation or rainfall, as well as through contact with contaminated soil or farming equipment that has not been properly sterilized.
The impact of this disease is significant, often leading to total crop loss if conditions remain favorable for the bacteria. Besides reducing yield volume, Flexibacteriosis compromises the storability of harvested produce, as infected batches often contaminate healthy stored items, leading to rapid spoilage of the entire stockpile during the post-harvest period.
- Implement strict crop rotation patterns to break the life cycle of soil-borne bacteria.
- Use certified disease-free seeds or planting material.
- Ensure proper field drainage to prevent excess moisture accumulation.
- Disinfect agricultural machinery and tools between field operations.
- Promptly remove and destroy infected plant debris to limit the spread of inoculum.
