Description
Flower blight, primarily caused by the fungus Botrytis cinerea, is a destructive plant disease that thrives in cool, damp conditions. Often referred to as grey mold, this pathogen is highly aggressive and opportunistic, affecting a vast array of ornamental plants and horticultural crops.
This disease is particularly devastating for flowering plants such as Dahlias, peonies, roses, and tulips. The fungus targets reproductive structures like flower buds and petals, though it can eventually spread systemically into the stems, causing significant structural damage to the entire plant.
Symptoms initially manifest as small, water-soaked spots on the petals. Under high humidity, these spots expand rapidly and become covered in a fuzzy, grey-to-brown mass of fungal spores. Infected flower buds often fail to open, turn brown, and become shriveled, effectively destroying the plant's aesthetic value.
The development and dissemination of the pathogen are driven by high atmospheric humidity, lack of air circulation, and temperatures between 15°C and 20°C. The spores are easily dispersed by wind, splashing water during irrigation, and garden tools, allowing the fungus to move swiftly through a dense planting area.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is crucial: remove and destroy all infected plant material immediately. Improve air movement through proper spacing and pruning. For severe outbreaks, apply appropriate fungicides, such as those containing copper compounds, chlorothalonil, or systemic agents.
