Rusty blight is a significant fungal disease affecting avocado production, primarily caused by species of the Colletotrichum genus. This pathogen poses a serious threat to fruit quality, causing necrotic lesions that significantly reduce the commercial value of the harvest and can lead to major yield losses in both commercial orchards and home gardens.

The disease targets avocado fruits primarily, though it can occasionally affect twigs and leaves. The pathogen is often latent, colonizing the surface of the fruit without showing immediate signs of damage. As the fruit matures, the fungus activates, causing localized infections that manifest as characteristic rust-colored lesions on the peel.

The primary symptom is the appearance of small, irregular rusty-brown spots on the fruit skin. As the disease progresses, these spots expand, darken, and may cause the skin to cork or crack. Once the protective barrier of the skin is broken, the infection can penetrate deeper into the flesh, leading to rot and making the fruit completely unmarketable.

Disease spread is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, frequent rainfall, and warm temperatures. These conditions stimulate the production and dispersal of fungal spores. Poor airflow within the tree canopy significantly increases the risk of infection, as moisture remains on the fruit surface for longer periods, facilitating spore germination.

Managing Rusty blight requires a multi-faceted approach emphasizing both prevention and timely intervention to minimize spread:
