Description
Bean anthracnose is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Colletotrichum lindemuthianum. This disease affects various parts of the plant, including stems, leaves, and pods, causing severe damage to common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) crops worldwide. It is particularly destructive in cool and wet climatic conditions.
The fungus is highly specialized to infect legumes. It can attack plants at any developmental stage, starting from seedling emergence. When environmental conditions are favorable, the disease progresses rapidly, potentially compromising the entire harvest quality and quantity if left unmanaged.
The primary symptoms are dark, sunken, circular lesions on stems, leaves, and pods. On pods, these lesions are often surrounded by a reddish-brown margin and can develop a pinkish mass of spores during humid weather. Leaf veins may also show dark discoloration, leading to necrosis and eventually causing the leaves to wither and drop prematurely.
The disease thrives in cool, moist conditions with temperatures between 15°C and 22°C. The pathogen survives in infected seeds and crop residues left on the soil surface. Spores are primarily dispersed by splashing water, rain, wind, and movement of equipment or animals through the field, allowing the disease to spread quickly across the farm.
- Always use certified, disease-free seed for planting.
- Practice crop rotation, avoiding bean production for at least 3 years on the same field.
- Incorporate crop debris into the soil immediately after harvest to speed up decomposition.
- Implement proper field sanitation and eliminate weed hosts of the pathogen.
- Apply preventative fungicide treatments and manage fields to ensure good air circulation.
The economic impact of bean anthracnose is severe, as it reduces seed germination and lowers the quality of the harvested produce. Infested seeds serve as the primary source of infection for subsequent seasons, creating a cycle that is difficult to break without strict integrated pest management (IPM) practices and early detection techniques.
