Description

Fusobacteriosis is a destructive plant disease caused by bacteria belonging to the Fusobacteria phylum. These anaerobic pathogens are capable of colonizing plant tissues, causing significant structural degradation, vascular blockage, and systemic wilting that leads to plant death if left untreated.

A wide range of crops is susceptible to this infection, including various vegetable species and root crops. The bacteria typically infiltrate the plant through root wounds or natural openings, establishing an environment where they multiply rapidly and secrete toxins that decompose the host's cellular structure.

The primary clinical signs of fusobacteriosis include wilting of the foliage, discoloration of the root neck, and the development of foul-smelling soft rot. As the disease progresses, the vascular bundles show signs of necrosis, which effectively prevents the upward transport of water and nutrients, causing the plant to wither.

The development and spread of the disease are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly waterlogged and compacted soils where oxygen levels are low. High ambient temperatures combined with poor soil drainage provide the perfect conditions for these anaerobic bacteria to thrive and move between plants.

Control and prevention strategies require a holistic approach to crop management. Key measures include:

  • Implementing proper crop rotation to break the pathogen's life cycle.
  • Improving soil aeration and drainage to reduce anaerobic pockets.
  • Applying bio-fungicides or copper-based treatments to protect the root zone.
  • Sanitizing agricultural tools to prevent mechanical transmission.
