Fusobacteriosis is a group of infectious plant diseases caused by Gram-negative anaerobic bacteria of the genus Fusobacterium. While these microorganisms are more commonly associated with medicine and veterinary practice, in agronomy, they are classified as pathogens responsible for bacterial rots and tissue necrosis, affecting both aerial parts and the root systems of crops.

The pathogen belongs to the category of anaerobic bacteria that actively proliferate in conditions of high moisture and limited oxygen availability within plant tissues. The disease affects a wide range of crops, including vegetables, ornamental plants, and certain industrial crops, leading to the destruction of cell walls and systemic tissue decay.

The primary symptoms of infection include the appearance of water-soaked spots that quickly transition into dark necrotic zones. As the infection progresses, the affected tissues emit a specific unpleasant odor, which is characteristic of the putrefactive processes caused by anaerobic microflora. Stem wilting and softening of root crops are frequently observed.

The conditions for the development and spread of fusobacteriosis are closely linked to poor agricultural practices: waterlogging in fields, high soil moisture, tissue damage caused by pests, or mechanical injuries during harvesting. The bacteria easily enter the plant through micro-cracks, rapidly colonizing the vascular system and causing organ death.

The harmfulness of the disease manifests in significant yield losses and a sharp decline in the shelf life of agricultural products during storage. To combat the disease, a complex of preventive measures must be implemented: crop rotation, field drainage, disinfection of storage facilities, and the use of resistant cultivars. The use of chemical control agents is limited, so priority is given to integrated agricultural management methods.
