Description
The disease known as cocoa gall is caused by the fungus Calonectria rigidiuscula, which has a well-known conidial state, Fusarium decemcellulare. This fungal pathogen is primarily recognized for its ability to induce abnormal tissue growth in various woody plants. It is classified as an ascomycete and functions as a opportunistic parasite.
The primary hosts of this pathogen include cacao trees and mango. While it often acts as a weak parasite, it can become highly destructive when the plant's natural defense systems are compromised. Infections often originate from physical injuries, pruning wounds, or damage caused by insects, which allow the fungus to penetrate the bark.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the development of galls—large, tumor-like swellings on branches and stems. As the infection progresses, the bark may crack and the vascular tissue may become necrotic, limiting the transport of nutrients. This eventually leads to dieback of branches, stunted growth, and in severe cases, the death of the entire tree.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development and spread of Calonectria rigidiuscula. High humidity, tropical rainfall, and warm temperatures facilitate the production and dispersal of spores. These spores are easily transmitted by wind, splashing rain, and vectors such as boring insects, which create fresh entry points for the pathogen.
Effective management and protection require a rigorous sanitation program. It is essential to prune and destroy infected branches to reduce the inoculum load in the orchard. Furthermore, protecting pruning wounds with fungicidal pastes and maintaining the overall health of the orchard by managing insect pests are vital strategies for long-term control.
