Calonectria kyotensis

Calonectria kyotensis

Description

Calonectria kyotensis is a fungal pathogen classified within the kingdom Fungi and the genus Calonectria. As an ascomycete, it acts as a significant threat to various plant species, particularly in nursery and greenhouse settings. It is widely recognized by agronomists for its ability to cause severe root rot, stem necrosis, and damping-off disease.

The host range of this pathogen includes a variety of woody ornamentals and several forestry species. The symptoms often manifest as dark lesions on the roots or lower stems, leading to sudden wilting and eventual death of the plant. Because the pathogen attacks the vascular or root system, early symptoms can be difficult to detect until the plant starts showing severe signs of stress.

The biological cycle of Calonectria kyotensis involves the production of conidia and persistent chlamydospores. These spores are disseminated primarily through water splash, movement of soil, and contaminated tools. The presence of chlamydospores allows the fungus to survive in the soil for extended periods, serving as a primary inoculum source for subsequent planting seasons.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high relative humidity and moist soil conditions. The pathogen thrives in warm temperatures, making it particularly aggressive during the warmer periods in greenhouses. Poor airflow and high-density planting exacerbate the risk of rapid spread, as the fungus easily moves from plant to plant under favorable conditions.

The damage caused by this pathogen can lead to significant economic losses in the ornamental plant trade due to high mortality rates. Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for mitigation:

  • maintaining strict hygiene standards in nurseries;
  • using pasteurized or sterilized soil substrates for propagation;
  • implementing adequate drainage to prevent water stagnation;
  • applying registered fungicides specifically targeted at fungal root pathogens;
  • promptly removing and destroying any infected plant tissue or debris.
