Gibbera canker

Gibbera canker (latin Gibbera vaccinii) is a fungal pathogen that specifically infects members of the Vaccinium genus, most notably lingonberries. The fungus attacks the plant tissue, causing significant damage that disrupts the physiological functions of the host plant and hinders its overall vigor.

The primary clinical sign of the infection is the development of dark lesions on the leaves, which eventually lead to necrotic spots. As the fungus matures, small, black fruiting bodies appear on the surface of the infected areas. These lesions can expand, causing severe leaf blighting, premature abscission, and potential dieback of younger, succulent stems.

The development and spread of Gibbera vaccinii are heavily dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. The fungus releases spores that are easily disseminated by wind and water splashes from rain. These spores infect healthy plant tissue rapidly, especially in dense or poorly ventilated commercial plantations.

The impact of this disease on agricultural productivity is substantial. By reducing the leaf area available for photosynthesis, the pathogen deprives the plant of the energy required for fruit production. This leads to diminished berry size, poor crop yields, and, in cases of severe or prolonged infection, the total decline of the plant stand.

Effective management and protection strategies rely on an integrated approach to reduce the inoculum load and improve plant resistance:

• Rigorous sanitation by removing and disposing of diseased plant debris and fallen foliage.
• Maintaining proper plant spacing to ensure adequate air circulation and reduce humidity levels.
• Applying recommended fungicides during the early stages of plant growth if infection risk is high.
• Selecting robust and disease-resistant cultivars for establishing new plantations.
