Ginger chlorosis is a condition characterized by the loss of green pigmentation in the leaves, significantly impairing the plant's ability to perform photosynthesis. The etiology of this condition ranges from physiological stress, such as nutrient deficiencies or poor drainage, to infectious diseases caused by viruses or fungal pathogens affecting the rhizomes.

The primary crop affected is the common ginger (Zingiber officinale). Ginger plants are particularly sensitive to environmental conditions, and any disruption in the balance of their growing medium, such as improper water acidity or lack of essential micronutrients, can trigger chlorotic symptoms in a short period.

Typical symptoms include the yellowing of leaf blades while the veins remain green. In cases of viral infection, the leaves may show mosaic patterns, distinct mottling, or curling at the edges. Without intervention, the affected leaves become necrotic, leading to a general decline in the plant's health and vigor.

The disease is exacerbated by poor soil aeration, overwatering, and alkaline soil conditions that prevent the uptake of iron and magnesium. Additionally, the presence of sucking insects like aphids or whiteflies acts as a major vector for transmitting viruses, which often leads to severe chlorotic outbreaks in commercial plantations.

The economic impact of ginger chlorosis is substantial, as it leads to reduced yields and inferior rhizome quality. Control and prevention strategies include:

  • Maintaining proper soil drainage to prevent root rot.
  • Applying chelated iron or micronutrient fertilizers if deficiency is diagnosed.
  • Monitoring for and controlling insect pests that spread pathogens.
  • Using disease-free, certified seed rhizomes for planting.
