Gloeobacteriosis is a plant disease caused by members of the Gloeobacteraceae family. These cyanobacteria, typically known for their environmental resilience, can act as pathogenic agents in specific agricultural settings. They interfere with plant metabolism by forming biofilms on the surface, which leads to metabolic stress and structural damage to the host plant.
This pathogen commonly affects a variety of plant species, particularly those grown in greenhouse environments, humid climates, or under poor water management practices. It targets both juvenile and mature tissues, effectively colonizing leaves, stems, and root collars. The presence of the pathogen is often associated with stagnant water or consistently high moisture levels.
The primary clinical signs of gloeobacteriosis include the formation of slimy, blue-green or brownish mats on the plant surface. As the infection progresses, the underlying tissues show signs of chlorosis, necrosis, and premature senescence. In severe cases, the spread of the pathogen leads to restricted nutrient uptake and visible wilting of the affected plant parts.
Conditions that favor the development of this disease include high ambient humidity, poor ventilation, and soil waterlogging. The bacteria often enter the plant through natural openings or accidental physical injuries. Therefore, managing environmental parameters and maintaining plant integrity are essential in preventing the outbreak and spread of the disease.
Control and prevention involve an integrated approach focusing on cultural practices. Growers should prioritize improving air circulation and ensuring proper soil drainage to eliminate the moisture films required by the pathogen. Chemical management may involve the application of registered bactericides, specifically those effective against bacterial biofilms, alongside strict sanitation protocols to ensure tools and equipment are free from contamination.
