The disease primarily affects a variety of pome and stone fruits, including apples, pears, peaches, and grapes. The bacteria exploit wounds in the fruit skin, such as bruises, punctures, or cracks caused by environmental stress or insect activity, to invade the plant tissue and initiate the infection process.

Symptoms of the infection typically include the formation of soft, sunken lesions, skin discoloration, and a pungent, acidic odor. Unlike some fungal rots, the texture of the affected area often becomes watery and pulpy, reflecting the intense breakdown of cellular components by bacterial enzymes.
