Gomphosphaeria is a genus of colonial cyanobacteria that acts as a biological threat to agricultural water management. It is primarily responsible for the eutrophication and heavy blooming of irrigation ponds, reservoirs, and water distribution channels.

The organism functions as a primary producer that forms large, mucilaginous colonies. These colonies thrive in stagnant or slow-moving water, utilizing agricultural runoff—specifically nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers—as a primary nutrient source for explosive growth.

While not a direct plant pathogen in the traditional sense, its presence in irrigation systems poses a severe risk. The physical clogging of drip irrigation lines by algal mucilage is a common problem, while the secretion of cyanotoxins can cause physiological stress in various greenhouse and field-grown crops.

Symptoms of an infestation are clearly visible as a green to blue-green surface scum on the water and a significant decrease in water transparency. As these populations reach their peak, the subsequent decay process leads to oxygen depletion and the production of malodorous gases in the water supply.

Control and prevention strategies focus on limiting nutrient runoff from farmland into water bodies through riparian buffers. For active management, water aeration, the application of targeted algaecides, and the installation of filtration systems are essential to maintain the integrity of the irrigation supply.
