Gracilicutes is a taxonomic group of bacteria characterized by a thin cell wall structure, which includes various significant plant pathogens known as phytoplasmas and spiroplasmas. In agricultural practice, these organisms are recognized as the causal agents of devastating systemic diseases that significantly hinder plant metabolism and physiological functions.

The disease is primarily caused by specialized prokaryotes that lack a rigid cell wall and reside exclusively in the phloem tissue of the host plant. By colonizing the sieve tubes, these pathogens disrupt the translocation of assimilates, leading to severe nutritional deficiency and widespread chlorosis or stunted growth in the affected agricultural crops.

These pathogens affect a diverse range of crops, including major economic staples such as tomatoes, potatoes, fruit trees, and various herbaceous ornamentals. The host range is wide, and because these bacteria can survive in numerous perennial weed species, the control of the disease presents a significant challenge for modern agriculture and integrated pest management systems.

Visible symptoms of infection often appear systemic and distinct:

  • Yellowing (chlorosis) of foliage starting from the terminal parts of the shoot.
  • Phyllody, where floral parts transform into leaf-like structures.
  • Witch's broom effect caused by excessive and abnormal lateral branching.
  • Dwarfing of the plant, leading to stunted stems and smaller fruit size.
  • Premature wilting and progressive decline of the entire plant structure.

The transmission of these pathogens is strictly vector-dependent, typically involving leafhoppers and planthoppers that acquire the phytoplasmas while feeding on the phloem of infected plants. Environmental conditions such as warm, dry weather and the presence of reservoir weed hosts around the fields are critical factors that accelerate the spread of the infection during the growing season.

Effective management requires a multi-layered approach, emphasizing the sanitation of plant materials and the elimination of overwintering weed reservoirs. Controlling insect vectors with systemic insecticides is crucial, but it must be combined with crop rotation and the use of resistant varieties to minimize economic loss from these persistent bacterial threats.
