Henbane mosaic (HMV) is a destructive plant disease caused by a virus belonging to the Potyvirus genus. It primarily affects members of the Solanaceae family. Among cultivated crops, sweet peppers are particularly susceptible to this infection, often experiencing severe growth retardation and yield loss.
The virus persists in wild reservoir hosts, with Henbane plants serving as the primary source of infection in nature. Once established in a field, the virus spreads through various ecological niches, surviving in perennial weeds and multiplying whenever the host plants provide a suitable environment for its development.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by a distinct mosaic pattern on leaves, consisting of patches of light and dark green. As the infection progresses, affected plants may show leaf distortion, chlorosis, and stunted development. In sweet peppers, the fruit set is often reduced, and the fruits themselves may be undersized or deformed.
Transmission of the Henbane mosaic virus occurs primarily through sap-sucking insects, with aphids acting as the most significant vectors. The virus is acquired by the aphid during feeding on an infected plant and is efficiently transmitted to healthy plants. Additionally, contaminated tools and human handling during cultivation can facilitate mechanical spread.
