Hydrogenophilales is an order of bacteria that is not typically classified as a primary phytopathogen causing classic plant diseases. However, in modern agronomic microbiology, their presence in the rhizosphere is of significant interest. These are chemolithoautotrophic organisms capable of using molecular hydrogen as an energy source, which makes them active participants in nutrient cycling within the soil profile.

Unlike classical pathogens, Hydrogenophilales often act as symbionts or opportunistic organisms. Under conditions of disrupted soil microflora balance or critical soil waterlogging, they can indirectly contribute to the development of root rots. The main crops in which their rhizosphere activity is recorded include cereals and vegetables grown in hydroponics or specific soil substrates.

The symptoms associated with the excessive growth of these bacteria are non-specific. Plants may exhibit signs of stress, leaf chlorosis, and stunted root system development. This occurs because, during their metabolic processes, these microorganisms may compete with plants for available nitrogen forms or alter the pH of the root zone, leading to secondary nutrient deficiencies in agricultural crops.

The proliferation of Hydrogenophilales populations is facilitated by specific conditions: the presence of hydrogen in soil air, high substrate moisture, and a lack of competitive microflora. They often multiply intensively in anthropogenically altered soils with poor gas exchange. This makes them indicators of specific ecological shifts, alerting agronomists to the need for adjustments in irrigation and soil aeration regimes.

Control and prevention measures are based on managing soil health. Recommended practices include crop rotation, the application of organic fertilizers to stimulate beneficial microflora that suppresses excess Hydrogenophilales populations, and regular inter-row cultivation to improve oxygen access. The use of fungicides against these bacteria is largely ineffective, so the focus is placed on agrotechnical methods of managing the rhizosphere environment.
