Description

Causative agent and disease type. Apple mosaic virus (ApMV), part of the Ilarvirus genus, is a persistent systemic viral disease. It disrupts the vascular transport system and chlorosis-related physiological processes within the host plant. Once a tree is infected, the virus spreads through its tissues, making it a chronic condition that persists throughout the plant's entire life cycle.

Host range. The virus exhibits a wide host range beyond apple and pear trees. It is known to infect various stone fruit species, such as cherry and plum, and several ornamental woody plants including roses, hazel, and birch. This versatility makes ApMV a complex challenge, as asymptomatic carriers can act as reservoirs for infection in proximity to orchards.

Symptoms and signs of infection. The hallmark of this virus is the appearance of chlorotic or necrotic spots, rings, or line patterns on leaves. In many cases, these patches are creamy yellow or white, forming a mosaic-like pattern. As the infection progresses, symptoms can include leaf deformation, stunted shoot growth, significant reduction in fruit size, and premature leaf drop, which weakens the tree's overall vigor.

Conditions for development and spread. The virus is primarily transmitted through vegetative propagation, specifically the use of infected scionwood during grafting or budding. Mechanical transmission via contaminated pruning tools is a common pathway for spread within an orchard. Natural transmission, such as root grafting or pollen movement, also plays a role in the dissemination of the virus between neighboring trees.

Harmfulness and prevention measures. The economic damage caused by ApMV manifests as lower yields and poorer fruit quality. Since there is no curative treatment for established viral infections, management focuses strictly on exclusion and sanitation practices.
