Description
Jasmine chlorosis is a physiological condition in which the leaves of the plant lose their green pigment, chlorophyll, resulting in yellowing foliage. This disease is common in various jasmine species and can significantly impact the health and aesthetic appeal of ornamental shrubs if left unmanaged.
The primary cause of chlorosis is often an inability to absorb essential nutrients, such as iron, due to an imbalanced soil pH. However, infectious chlorosis can also be triggered by plant viruses transmitted by sap-sucking insects, including aphids, whiteflies, and mites, which disrupt the plant's vascular system and nutrient uptake.
Symptoms initially appear as interveinal yellowing, where the leaf blades turn yellow while the veins remain green. In severe stages, the entire leaf may fade to a pale yellow or whitish color, leading to stunted growth, reduced flower production, and in extreme cases, necrosis and defoliation of the terminal branches.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disorder. Alkaline soils with a high pH levels significantly inhibit iron bioavailability, which is a leading cause for jasmine. Furthermore, poor soil drainage leading to waterlogged roots prevents proper oxygenation, exacerbating the deficiency and weakening the plant's resistance.
Management strategies focus on soil acidification and the application of chelated iron supplements through foliar sprays or root drenches. Effective preventive measures include improving soil structure with organic matter, ensuring proper irrigation practices, and implementing an integrated pest management program to control insect vectors that spread viral pathogens.
