Klebsiella pneumoniae is a gram-negative bacterium that acts as an emerging phytopathogen capable of causing significant damage to various crops. In agricultural settings, it functions as an opportunistic pathogen that can invade plant vascular systems, leading to systemic infections that compromise the physiological health of the host.
The host range of this bacterium includes many essential agricultural species, such as tomatoes, potatoes, and various cereals. The pathogen is often identified in greenhouse environments where high density and environmental control can facilitate its transmission. Once established within the plant, it disrupts water and nutrient transport, leading to a rapid decline in productivity.
Symptoms of bacterial klebsiellosis include wilting, chlorosis, and the development of dark, necrotic lesions on stems and leaves.
