Lamprocystis is a genus of phototrophic sulfur bacteria belonging to the Chromatiaceae family. While primarily known for their presence in aquatic ecosystems, in agricultural settings, particularly in hydroponics and greenhouse systems, they can become problematic indicators of anaerobic conditions, potentially leading to plant root zone degradation.

The causative agents are gram-negative bacteria that perform anoxygenic photosynthesis using hydrogen sulfide. They thrive in environments where organic decomposition occurs under waterlogged conditions, making them a clear sign of poor water circulation or insufficient oxygenation in the growing substrate or nutrient delivery system.

Symptoms of Lamprocystis colonization are visually distinct. They appear as purplish or reddish slime films on the surface of rockwool, perlite, or other growing media. Plants affected by this bacterial activity show stunted growth, leaf chlorosis, and root system necrosis accompanied by a noticeable sulfurous odor indicative of organic decay.

The development and spread of these bacteria are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. They propagate rapidly in low-light, high-moisture, and oxygen-depleted zones where hydrogen sulfide is produced by other anaerobic microorganisms. High levels of un-decomposed organic matter in the root zone serve as a primary energy source, exacerbating the spread of the colony.

To control and prevent Lamprocystis, growers must prioritize root zone management. Essential steps include increasing dissolved oxygen levels in nutrient solutions, improving irrigation drainage to prevent waterlogging, and maintaining strict hygiene protocols. Regular cleaning of reservoirs and the use of oxidizing agents to neutralize the substrate environment are highly recommended to mitigate damage.
