Legionellosis, caused by bacteria of the Legionellales order, presents a specific challenge in modern greenhouse and hydroponic agriculture. These microorganisms thrive in aquatic environments, often colonizing the inner surfaces of irrigation pipes and forming resilient biofilms.

The causative agent consists of gram-negative bacteria that function as opportunistic pathogens within artificial water systems. In agriculture, their danger lies not only in potential plant physiological stress but also in the degradation of water quality, which negatively impacts the overall nutrient uptake of crops.

Crops most susceptible to these influences include leafy greens and greenhouse ornamentals grown in intensive cultivation cycles. The spread occurs primarily through aerosol dispersion, where contaminated water particles settle on plant surfaces, potentially leading to bacterial infiltration and tissue decline.

The symptoms of infection often manifest as wilting of succulent parts, yellowing of foliage, and necrotic lesion development. The pathogen disrupts regular metabolic processes, leading to stunted growth and, in severe cases, the collapse of root tissue due to the secondary presence of bacterial colonies in the growing medium.

Maintaining water temperatures outside the optimal range for bacterial growth and using high-efficiency water filtration are essential for disease prevention.
