Leifsonia kafniensis is a pathogenic bacterium classified within the group of actinomycetes that causes specific bacterial diseases in various agricultural crops. This microorganism is a gram-negative, non-motile rod that can survive in the soil and is transmitted through contaminated planting material, irrigation water, or farming tools used in fields.
The primary hosts susceptible to this pathogen include vegetable crops, particularly members of the Solanaceae family. Most frequently, Leifsonia kafniensis is identified as an agent causing systemic infection in potatoes, leading to severe dysfunction of the plant's vascular system, which hinders the transport of water and nutrients throughout the plant.
Key symptoms of the infection include the following manifestations:
- Yellowing and gradual wilting of the foliage, usually starting from the lower leaves.
- Darkening of the vascular bundles in stems and tubers, visible when the tissues are cut crosswise.

Effective management strategies involve the exclusive use of certified disease-free seed stock, strict adherence to crop rotation cycles (avoiding host crops for 3-4 years), and diligent sanitation of farm equipment to prevent the mechanical spread of the bacteria.
