It is essential to clarify that Leptospira interrogans is not a plant pathogen and does not cause plant diseases. It is a pathogenic spirochete responsible for leptospirosis, a severe zoonotic disease affecting livestock and humans. In agricultural management, it is classified as a significant veterinary and biosafety hazard.

The causative agent, Leptospira interrogans, is a bacterium that thrives in moist environments. While it does not infect plant tissues, it survives in waterlogged soils, ponds, and contaminated irrigation sources. Agricultural fields can become contaminated through the waste of infected wild mammals, particularly rodents.

The disease in livestock manifests through fever, jaundice, reproductive failure, and weight loss. While crops themselves remain healthy, contaminated harvested materials or contaminated water used for irrigation can facilitate the mechanical transfer of bacteria to farm animals, posing a direct threat to livestock health.

The development and survival of the bacteria depend on moisture and environmental pH. They persist longer in wet, neutral-to-slightly alkaline soils. During periods of heavy rainfall or in low-lying areas with poor drainage, the population of Leptospira can increase significantly, turning the field into a hazardous zone for farm workers and cattle.
