Lonsdalea is a genus of phytopathogenic bacteria within the Enterobacteriaceae family. The species Lonsdalea quercina is recognized as the causal agent of bacterial dieback in various oak species. This bacterium behaves as a vascular pathogen, colonizing the xylem and disrupting the tree's physiological processes, which eventually leads to the necrotic degradation of branches and trunks.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Fagaceae family, particularly oaks. The bacteria gain entry into the plant tissues through wounds caused by pruning, climatic stress (such as frost cracks), or biological damage inflicted by boring insects. Once inside, the pathogen multiplies, spreading through the vascular system and eventually causing localized or systemic necrosis.
Symptoms of Lonsdalea infection are often progressive and distinct in their manifestation:
- Formation of vertical fissures and cracks on the bark.
- Bacterial exudate or ooze seeping from affected bark areas.
- Localized wilting and subsequent necrosis of branches.
- Death of the cambium layer beneath the bark in infected zones.
Development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions. Periods of high humidity and moderate temperatures favor the multiplication of the bacteria. Dissemination occurs primarily through rain splashes, mechanical transfer via contaminated pruning tools, and insect vectors. Infected nursery stock remains a critical pathway for the long-distance spread of the bacterium into new areas.
Management strategies for Lonsdalea emphasize prevention and rigorous sanitation. There are no systemic chemical cures for infected trees, making the removal and destruction of infected wood essential to limit the spread of inoculum. Maintaining tree vitality through proper site selection and avoiding mechanical injury is vital. Furthermore, strict sterilization of all pruning equipment with bactericidal agents between trees is mandatory to prevent the artificial transmission of the pathogen.
