Initially classified within the genus Erwinia, it has been reclassified to the Lonsdalea genus based on phylogenetic studies. As a vascular pathogen, it poses a particular threat to both agricultural and ornamental horticulture, leading to systemic infection in susceptible host plants.

This pathogen primarily affects plants within the Apiaceae family. By colonizing the xylem of the host, the bacteria interrupt the plant's vascular flow, which is essential for transporting water and nutrients. This systemic disruption causes the plant to wilt rapidly and, in severe cases, leads to total crop failure within the affected greenhouse or field plot.

Key symptoms include chlorosis, the appearance of water-soaked lesions on leaves and stems, and subsequent tissue necrosis. Under conditions of high humidity, infected tissues may exhibit bacterial oozing. Internally, a cross-section of an infected stem often reveals discoloration of the vascular bundles, confirming the systemic nature of the colonization by the bacteria.

Therefore, the focus must remain on preventative measures. Growers should prioritize the use of certified pathogen-free seeds, implement strict sanitation protocols for tools, and avoid excessive irrigation that favors bacterial proliferation. Monitoring and quick eradication of symptomatic plants are essential to prevent local outbreaks.
