Description

Barley yellow dwarf, caused by Luteovirus sociomali (part of the Barley yellow dwarf virus group), is the most widespread and damaging viral disease affecting cereal crops globally. The virus is restricted to the phloem tissue, where it interferes with the translocation of sugars, causing systemic physiological disruption.

The host range includes a wide variety of cultivated grasses such as wheat, barley, oats, and maize. Additionally, numerous wild grass species serve as asymptomatic reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the ecosystem throughout the year.

Symptoms often appear in patches within the field. In barley, the foliage turns bright yellow, while in wheat and oats, it may develop red or purple discolorations. Infected plants exhibit stunted growth, reduced tillering, and shriveled grains, significantly impacting both yield quantity and quality.

Transmission occurs exclusively via aphid vectors, most notably the bird cherry-oat aphid and the English grain aphid. These insects acquire the virus by feeding on infected plants and remain infectious for the rest of their lives, facilitating rapid spread across large areas during favorable weather.

Management strategies focus on breaking the infection cycle. Key practices include adjusting planting dates to avoid peak aphid migration, controlling grassy weeds that harbor the virus, and deploying strategic insecticide applications. Developing and using resistant or tolerant cultivars remains the most effective long-term solution.
