Description
Lysobacteriosis is a category of plant diseases associated with the presence and activity of bacteria from the Lysobacteraceae family. As part of the Xanthomonadales order, these microorganisms are versatile agents that can function as biocontrol organisms in some contexts but act as plant pathogens when they infiltrate host tissues. They utilize specific enzymes to break down plant cell walls, leading to tissue degradation.
Various crops, including vegetables, cereals, and fruits, are susceptible to infection by these bacteria. The pathogen typically enters the plant through natural openings like stomata or through mechanical wounds caused by harvesting, weather damage, or pest feeding. Once inside, the bacteria multiply rapidly, spreading through the vascular system or intercellular spaces of the plant tissue.
Symptoms often begin as small, water-soaked, angular spots on leaves, which progressively expand and turn necrotic. As the disease advances, leaves may yellow, wilt, or drop prematurely. On stems and fruits, the infection can manifest as soft, mushy lesions that emit a distinct bacterial exudate under humid conditions. If left unchecked, the infection can devastate the yield and quality of the entire harvest.
The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity, heavy dew, and moderate to warm temperatures. Stagnant water and poor airflow in greenhouses significantly increase the risk of infection. The pathogen can survive for extended periods in soil debris, on weeds, or on contaminated equipment, making survival between growing seasons a major challenge for farmers.
Effective management requires a combination of cultural and chemical strategies. Sanitation is crucial; removing and destroying infected plant debris reduces the primary inoculum for the next season. Preventive measures include using high-quality certified seeds, implementing proper crop rotation, and maintaining optimal spacing for air circulation. Bactericidal treatments and copper-based sprays are recommended during periods conducive to disease spread to protect the foliage.
