Description
Lysobacteriosis is a plant disease caused by bacteria belonging to the order Lysobacterales. These bacteria are recognized for their diverse metabolic capabilities, allowing them to thrive in various environments, including the plant rhizosphere and phyllosphere. When they act as phytopathogens, they utilize complex enzymatic systems to degrade plant tissue, leading to localized or systemic infection.
The host range for these bacteria is broad, affecting various horticultural and field crops. Key targets include Solanaceous crops (tomatoes, peppers, potatoes) and certain grains. The bacteria typically gain entry to the plant through natural openings such as stomata, hydathodes, or through wounds created by mechanical handling, pruning, or insect feeding activity.
Symptoms of lysobacteriosis often begin as small, water-soaked lesions on leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions develop into necrotic spots, often bordered by a chlorotic halo. In high humidity conditions, bacterial exudate may be visible on the surface of infected leaves. Severe infections can lead to stem necrosis, wilting, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and ultimately, substantial yield loss.
The development and dissemination of the pathogen are heavily favored by high humidity (exceeding 80%), frequent rain events, and moderate temperatures (20–28°C). The bacteria can spread rapidly through splash dispersal from rain or irrigation water, as well as through contaminated agricultural equipment, seeds, and even workers moving through the fields during wet weather.
Management of lysobacteriosis requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy. Key practices include using certified disease-free seed, implementing crop rotation to break the pathogen lifecycle, and ensuring proper sanitation of tools. Preventive sprays with copper-based bactericides or biological control agents (such as specific strains of beneficial bacteria) are effective in suppressing pathogen populations during high-risk periods.
