Maize mottle is a viral disease primarily affecting corn crops, caused by viruses transmitted by specific insect vectors. This disease poses a significant threat to cereal production in various regions, leading to systemic physiological stress within the plant. By disrupting the vascular system, the virus interferes with carbohydrate transport and overall plant vitality.
The disease primarily impacts maize (Zea mays), but it also poses a risk to sorghum and various wild grasses. These alternative hosts are critical, as they can maintain viral reservoirs throughout the year, especially in tropical and subtropical environments where growing seasons overlap and weed pressure is high.
Symptoms of Maize mottle typically manifest as chlorotic streaks, mottling, and mosaic patterns on the leaves. In severe infections, plants exhibit significant stunting, reduced internode length, and delayed maturation. The reproductive capacity is also severely hampered, resulting in small, poorly filled ears and poor grain quality.
The transmission of the virus is exclusively mediated by leafhoppers (Cicadellidae). The virus is acquired by the vector during feeding and is then transmitted to healthy plants through a persistent mechanism. Environmental conditions that favor the rapid migration and reproduction of these vectors, such as high temperatures and moist conditions, are primary drivers of widespread disease outbreaks.
Management strategies focus on integrated pest management (IPM) practices to limit both the viral source and the insect vectors. Key measures include:
- Planting resistant or tolerant corn hybrids.
- Controlling wild grass hosts along field borders and irrigation canals.
- Applying targeted insecticides to manage leafhopper populations during the susceptible vegetative growth stages.
