The causal agent of this disease is Mastrevirus tritici, a viral pathogen belonging to the Geminiviridae family. As a systemic disease, it impacts the vascular tissues of host plants, severely hindering essential physiological processes such as photosynthesis and nutrient translocation, which leads to stunted growth and significant physiological distress in susceptible cereal crops.

The primary hosts for this virus are wheat, barley, and oats, though various wild grasses also act as essential reservoirs for the virus during the off-season. Infections typically occur in the early stages of plant development, specifically during the seedling and tillering phases, rendering young crops particularly vulnerable to transmission.

Disease symptoms are characterized by severe stunting, caused by the drastic shortening of internodes.
