The organism acts as a primary producer that thrives through photosynthesis. Unlike traditional plant pathogens such as fungi or bacteria, Merismopedia elegans affects plants by creating physical barriers and altering the chemical balance of the surrounding water. Its colonial structure allows it to expand rapidly across the surface, effectively cutting off light and gas exchange for submerged plant organs.
