Description

Microbacteriosis is a complex plant disease caused by bacteria from the Microbacteriaceae family. These Gram-positive actinobacteria are widespread in the environment and, under favorable conditions, act as plant pathogens, causing systemic vascular infections that significantly impact agricultural production.

The disease is classified as a bacterial vascular wilt or soft rot, depending on the host species and strain. The pathogen colonizes the xylem, producing polysaccharides and enzymes that degrade plant cell walls, leading to the disruption of water transport and subsequent wilting of the host plant.

The host range is diverse, affecting various horticultural and field crops. Symptoms typically include leaf chlorosis, necrosis along the margins of the foliage, stunted growth, and the wilting of stems despite adequate irrigation. Internal vascular discoloration, often seen as brown streaks in cross-sections, is a diagnostic hallmark of the infection.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. High humidity, moderate to warm temperatures, and poor drainage are primary catalysts for rapid spread. The bacteria are often soil-borne but can also be disseminated through infested planting material, irrigation water, and the feeding activities of sucking insect vectors.

Managing microbacteriosis requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize economic losses. Effective strategies include:

  • Using disease-free, certified seeds and seedlings.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to reduce soil inoculum levels.
  • Sanitizing pruning tools and machinery between fields.
  • Applying preventive bactericides and biological control agents to manage early-stage outbreaks.
