Microchaetaceae are a family of filamentous cyanobacteria that function as significant phycopathogens in agricultural systems. These organisms establish themselves as epiphytes or semi-parasites on the surface of host plants, thriving particularly in environments characterized by prolonged high humidity or saturated soil conditions.

The primary symptom of infection is the formation of dense, often dark-colored films or crusts on foliage, stems, or fruits. By coating the plant surface, these algal colonies physically obstruct stomata and limit light absorption, which severely disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to chlorosis, stunted growth, and reduced crop vigor.
