The Microcoleaceae family consists of filamentous cyanobacteria that frequently occur in agricultural environments. While not classic plant pathogens, their massive proliferation creates significant agronomic issues by forming dense, gelatinous mats on the soil or substrate surface.

The primary mechanism of damage is mechanical and physiological: the slimy colonies block gas exchange, preventing oxygen from reaching the root zone. This creates an anaerobic micro-environment, which severely stunts the development of young plants, seedlings, and root systems in hydroponic systems.

These organisms primarily affect greenhouse-grown vegetables, nursery beds, and water-logged fields. Excessive moisture, combined with high concentrations of residual nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers, creates ideal conditions for their rapid colonization of the growing medium.

Symptoms typically include a dark green or brown, slick, slimy coating on the soil surface. Affected plants often show signs of nutrient deficiency, chlorosis, and wilting because their roots are suffocated by the microbial mat, making them highly susceptible to fungal root rot diseases.

Effective management strategies focus on preventing ideal growth conditions. Key measures include:

  • Improving drainage to prevent standing water and surface saturation.
  • Adjusting irrigation schedules to allow surface layers to dry out between waterings.
  • Applying preventive measures such as copper-based algaecides or hydrogen peroxide treatments to affected surfaces.
  • Ensuring proper ventilation and light management in protected growing areas.

Integrated control is essential, as the presence of Microcoleaceae is often an indicator of poor management practices. By stabilizing soil moisture and nutrient levels, growers can significantly reduce the pressure exerted by these cyanobacterial colonies on their crops.
