Microcoleus vaginatus is a dominant filamentous cyanobacterium found in biological soil crusts. While these organisms contribute to soil stabilization in natural ecosystems, in agricultural fields, they can act as a stress factor by forming dense, impermeable crusts that interfere with plant growth and soil aeration.

The organism belongs to the group of photosynthetic cyanobacteria that thrive on the soil surface. It acts as a biological impediment, using extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to bind soil particles together, creating a physical seal over the seedbed that hinders the emergence of germinating seeds.

Commonly affected crops include vegetable seeds and small-grain cereals that require loose, aerobic soil surfaces for successful establishment. Symptoms of an infestation include the visible appearance of dark, shiny, or leathery crusts on the soil surface, especially after irrigation or rain events, which may crack as they dry out.

The development of Microcoleus vaginatus is triggered by high solar radiation, adequate surface moisture, and minimal soil disturbance. It colonizes the upper few millimeters of the soil profile, where light is available for photosynthesis, leading to rapid proliferation during warm, humid growing conditions.

Economic damage stems from reduced crop stands and the physical suppression of young shoots. Protection strategies prioritize mechanical intervention, such as light harrowing or rotary hoeing, to break the crust. Furthermore, improving soil organic matter and managing irrigation schedules to avoid prolonged surface wetness are essential for long-term control.
