Microcystis is a genus of cyanobacteria within the Microcystaceae family. While not a conventional plant disease, it acts as a severe threat to agricultural production by contaminating irrigation water sources, such as reservoirs and canals, which are essential for crop maintenance and livestock support.

The causative agents are colonial cyanobacteria that perform oxygenic photosynthesis. A major concern is their ability to produce potent toxins known as microcystins. These compounds, if present in irrigation water, can infiltrate the soil-plant system, potentially leading to systemic toxicity in various agricultural crops and impacting soil health.

The impact of this organism is widespread in farming regions where open water sources are used for irrigation. Symptoms of water contamination include a distinct green, slimy appearance of the water surface. When this water is applied to crops, the toxins can inhibit seed germination and stunt the growth of young plants.

Development and spread are triggered primarily by eutrophication—the excessive enrichment of water with nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers. When these nutrients wash off from agricultural fields, they create ideal conditions for Microcystis blooms, especially during periods of high solar radiation and stagnant, warm water conditions.

Effective management and protection strategies are essential for maintaining water safety. Proactive measures include implementing precision agriculture to minimize nutrient runoff, maintaining vegetative buffer strips along water edges, using mechanical aeration to prevent stagnation, and employing advanced water filtration systems to remove cyanotoxins before field application.
