Microcystis is a genus of freshwater cyanobacteria known for producing toxic secondary metabolites called microcystins. In an agricultural context, it is considered a significant biological risk factor. When these bacteria contaminate irrigation water sources, they pose a threat to both the health of the crops and the safety of the agricultural output intended for human consumption.

The pathogenicity in terms of agriculture is indirect but severe. Irrigation with water heavily contaminated by these toxins can lead to the uptake and accumulation of microcystins within plant tissues. Studies suggest that vegetables and fruits exposed to these toxins may exhibit physiological stress, leading to decreased yields and chemical residues that exceed safety standards.

Symptoms of crop exposure to contaminated irrigation include stunted plant development, chlorosis, and in severe cases, wilting or necrotic spotting on leaves. Since these toxins are heat-stable, they are not easily degraded, potentially remaining in the final product and posing a risk to food security if the water source is not managed properly.

The development of these blooms is closely linked to nutrient runoff from agricultural fields, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus. Warmer climates and still water conditions facilitate rapid colonization by Microcystis. Once established, these populations dominate the aquatic ecosystem, further degrading water quality for all subsequent irrigation activities.

Effective management requires a combination of water quality monitoring and preventive agricultural practices. Producers must focus on minimizing chemical runoff into water sources.
