Microcystis aeruginosa is a species of freshwater cyanobacteria recognized as a primary agent of harmful algal blooms. The primary crop affected by this organism is rice. When irrigation systems become contaminated, these bacteria proliferate, creating a biofilm that blocks essential sunlight from reaching submerged plant parts and triggers chemical changes in the water, such as oxygen depletion and fluctuations in pH levels, which are harmful to root development.
