Micromonosporosis is a plant disease caused by actinomycetes of the genus Micromonospora. These organisms are aerobic, gram-positive bacteria that form branched mycelium, which often leads to confusion with fungal pathogens in diagnostic settings. They primarily reside in the soil and can transition into phytopathogenic forms when plant resistance is compromised.
The pathogen affects a wide range of crops, including various vegetables, grains, and nursery plants. It is particularly destructive in greenhouse conditions where the environment is stable and conducive to the rapid spread of soil-borne pathogens. Seedlings are the most susceptible stage, often showing symptoms shortly after transplanting or germination.
The primary clinical signs of the disease include root system rot, discoloration of the root neck, and vascular browning. Affected plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and wilting, even when soil moisture appears adequate. If left unmanaged, the root system decays completely, leading to the collapse and death of the plant.
Environmental conditions that favor the development of Micromonospora include high soil moisture, poor drainage, and temperatures ranging from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. The pathogen thrives in organic-rich soils that lack sufficient oxygenation. It can persist for long periods in soil debris or contaminated water, waiting for favorable conditions to infect plant tissues.
