Monochaetia twig canker is a serious fungal disease caused by the pathogen Seiridium unicorne. This infection primarily manifests as a necrotic disease that affects the bark, cambium, and phloem of woody plants. In agricultural settings, it is recognized as a significant threat that can compromise the structural integrity of fruit trees and lead to the eventual dieback of branches and limbs.

Although this pathogen is widely known for its impact on various coniferous species, it also affects deciduous trees, including the apple tree. The fungus typically gains entry into the host through pruning wounds, frost cracks, sunscald areas, or openings created by insects. Once established, it colonizes the bark and inner tissues, interfering with the vascular system and nutrient transport within the branch.
