Description

Seiridium unicorne is a significant phytopathogenic fungus known as a causal agent of bark canker in various coniferous species, particularly those in the Cupressaceae family. Classified within the Ascomycota phylum, this pathogen is infamous for causing severe necrosis in the cortical and cambial tissues of trees such as cypresses, junipers, and cedars, often leading to canopy dieback and tree death.

The disease symptoms typically manifest as localized sunken areas on the bark, followed by the cracking and splitting of the cortical tissue. A common diagnostic sign is the copious exudation of resin near the site of infection. As the fungus advances, it girdles the branches or the main trunk, effectively cutting off nutrient and water supply, which results in the yellowing and subsequent browning of the foliage above the infection point.

The life cycle of Seiridium unicorne is characterized by the production of acervuli on the surface of the infected bark. These structures produce numerous conidia (spores) that serve as primary inoculum. The fungus spreads most efficiently during periods of high humidity and rainfall, as water droplets facilitate the splashing and transport of spores to susceptible wound sites on healthy branches or neighboring trees.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. Warm, humid weather is optimal for the rapid germination and colonization of the host plant. Trees that are already stressed due to drought, poor soil fertility, or improper pruning practices are significantly more susceptible to the pathogen. Furthermore, poor airflow within dense plantings creates an ideal microclimate for the fungus to persist and spread.

Management of the disease requires strict adherence to cultural and chemical controls:

  • Rigorous pruning of infected branches several inches below the visible lesion, with mandatory sterilization of tools.
  • Fungicidal treatments utilizing copper-based chemicals to protect fresh pruning wounds and vulnerable healthy tissue.
  • Improving plant vigor through balanced fertilization and proper irrigation to reduce stress.
  • Avoiding overhead irrigation that creates moisture-rich environments on the bark surface.
