Description
Panama disease, caused by the soil-borne fungus Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense, is a devastating vascular wilt disease affecting banana plantations worldwide. The pathogen invades the plant through its root system, effectively clogging the xylem and depriving the plant of water and essential nutrients.
The disease primarily impacts major banana cultivars, including the globally popular Cavendish and the historic Gros Michel. The fungus remains dormant in the soil for extended periods, waiting for a susceptible host to emerge or be planted, making it a persistent threat to global banana production.
Early symptoms include the yellowing of older leaves, often starting at the margins and progressing inward. As the infection advances, the leaf stalks collapse, forming a dense collar of dead foliage around the pseudostem, while the internal tissues reveal discolored, necrotic vascular strands.
The spread of the fungus is facilitated by the movement of contaminated soil, water runoff, and the exchange of non-certified planting material. High humidity and warm soil temperatures significantly accelerate the proliferation of fungal spores, increasing the rate of infection across a field.
Effective management focuses on exclusion and sanitation, as there is currently no cure for infected plants. Strategies include implementing strict quarantine measures, disinfecting equipment between fields, and focusing research on the development of disease-resistant genetic varieties to ensure long-term stability.
