Plant mycoplasmosis refers to a range of severe plant diseases caused by phytoplasmas, which are small prokaryotic organisms lacking a cell wall. These pathogens inhabit the plant's phloem, interfering with the translocation of sugars and nutrients, which results in stunted growth and systemic metabolic dysfunction of the host plant.

These diseases affect a wide variety of botanical families, including Solanaceae, Asteraceae, and various fruit-bearing trees. The economic impact is significant as these infections can lead to total yield loss in affected fields, especially in crops like potatoes, tomatoes, and various ornamental plants, making early detection vital for large-scale operations.

Clinical symptoms include general yellowing or reddening of leaves, proliferation of lateral buds leading to a bushy appearance, and floral abnormalities such as greening of flower parts. In many cases, the plant ceases normal development, fruits become deformed or fail to mature, and the overall plant vigor declines rapidly over a single growing season.

When these insects feed on an infected plant, they ingest the phytoplasma, which then circulates through their body and is transmitted to healthy plants during subsequent feeding events, often turning the vectors into permanent carriers of the disease.
