Neisseria polysaccharea represents a genus of bacteria that, while classically documented in other fields of microbiology, can act as an opportunistic pathogen in various plant species under specific environmental stress conditions. As an emerging interest in plant pathology, its role in causing tissue damage involves the breakdown of complex carbohydrates and cellular wall structures, leading to compromised plant health.
The pathogen primarily affects herbaceous plants and specific greenhouse vegetable crops. It thrives by exploiting weakened plant defense systems, often introduced through irrigation systems or contaminated soil particles. Its ability to colonize the rhizosphere makes it particularly dangerous for young seedlings and plants grown in high-humidity nursery environments.
Symptoms are characterized by the initial appearance of small, water-soaked lesions on leaves and stems. As the infection progresses, these areas coalesce into larger necrotic zones, often exhibiting a dark, greasy texture. In severe cases, the plant tissue undergoes rapid softening, leading to wilting and, ultimately, the death of the affected plant section or the entire organism.
Development and dissemination are driven by high relative humidity (above 85%) and temperature fluctuations between 20°C and 30°C. Water splashes during irrigation or heavy rain events are the primary vectors for local spread. Furthermore, contaminated equipment and human handling during pruning or harvesting serve as high-risk transmission pathways for moving the bacteria between healthy plants.
Managing this disease requires a proactive and strictly monitored approach to crop hygiene:
- Implement strict humidity control measures in greenhouses to prevent pathogen proliferation.
- Use certified, disease-free seed and transplant materials.
- Apply rigorous sanitation protocols for all agricultural tools and surfaces using approved disinfectants.
- Monitor crops frequently for early signs of lesions to remove and destroy infected plant parts immediately.
- Optimize irrigation techniques, such as drip irrigation, to keep foliage dry.
