Nostoc ellipsosporum is a type of cyanobacterium that can negatively affect agricultural production by forming dense, mucilaginous mats on soil surfaces. While these organisms are recognized for their nitrogen-fixing capabilities in natural ecosystems, in a managed agricultural setting, they can interfere with soil aeration and crop development, particularly in wet environments.
This organism is commonly found in rice paddy fields and greenhouse environments where constant high humidity is maintained. It poses a threat to young seedlings, as the dense biofilm formed by the colonies creates a physical barrier that restricts gas exchange and water penetration, which are essential for the germination and early growth stages of the crops.
The visual symptoms include the formation of jelly-like colonies on the soil surface, which may appear green, dark blue, or brown depending on the light and hydration levels. As the surface dries, these colonies harden into a crust, which creates a significant challenge for soil respiration and often leads to root suffocation in sensitive plants.
The spread of this cyanobacterium is primarily driven by excessive soil moisture, high light intensity, and the availability of surplus phosphorus in the top layer of the soil. Poor drainage management is the most significant factor that allows these colonies to multiply rapidly, especially in fields with heavy or poorly structured soil that stays wet for prolonged periods.
To minimize the impact of Nostoc ellipsosporum on agricultural yields, agronomists recommend a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:
- Improve soil drainage to eliminate standing water on the field surface.
- Perform timely mechanical cultivation to break up existing cyanobacterial mats.
- Regulate irrigation frequency to allow the soil surface to dry out periodically.
- Apply specialized algaecides or copper-based compounds when infestation levels significantly impact crop health.
