Nostoc muscorum is a species of cyanobacteria that often colonizes greenhouse soils and potting substrates. While it does not directly infect plant tissues like a fungus, its rapid proliferation creates a hostile environment that significantly hinders the development of commercial crops and ornamental plants.

This organism primarily impacts seedlings and young plants in controlled environments. Its presence on the soil surface competes with the plants for essential nutrients and space, while the physical formation of the colony creates a barrier that alters the rhizosphere's micro-environment.

The primary symptom of infestation is the emergence of a slimy, dark green or olive-colored gelatinous mat on the soil surface. As the substrate dries, this mat hardens into a rigid crust, which drastically reduces soil aeration and water infiltration, leading to root suffocation and increased risk of damping-off diseases.

Development is driven by a combination of high moisture levels, inadequate ventilation, and long periods of intense light exposure. These conditions are ideal for the cyanobacteria to thrive, particularly in soils enriched with phosphorus, which acts as a stimulant for their colonial growth patterns.

Prevention and management require strict cultural practices to make the environment less hospitable for the algae. Key strategies include:

  • Adjusting irrigation schedules to allow for surface drying.
  • Improving airflow within greenhouse structures to reduce surface humidity.
  • Applying a thin layer of sand or grit to the soil surface to block light.
  • Ensuring soil drainage is optimized to prevent waterlogging.
