Description
Oat necrotic mottle is a viral plant disease caused by the Oat necrotic mottle virus (ONMV). This pathogen belongs to the Rymovirus genus within the Potyviridae family and represents a specialized threat to cereal crop productivity.
The primary host for this virus is the common oat (Avena sativa). While it is highly host-specific, the virus can also persist in various wild grass species, which often serve as an alternative reservoir for the pathogen between growing seasons.
The visual symptoms typically appear as chlorotic mottling, mosaic patterns, and streaks on the leaves. As the disease progresses, these lesions turn necrotic, leading to the desiccation of leaf tissue and a significant reduction in the plant's photosynthetic efficiency.
Transmission occurs through the eriophyid mite Abacarus hystrix. The spread of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly cool, moist weather conditions that promote mite migration and colonization of new oat seedlings during the early stages of development.
The economic impact of this disease is significant, resulting in yield losses and reduced grain quality. Effective management strategies involve:
- cultivating resistant oat varieties;
- controlling grassy weed populations near fields;
- practicing crop rotation to break the virus-vector cycle;
- adjusting sowing dates to minimize seedling exposure to mite vectors.
