Description

Olive yellows is a devastating phytoplasma disease that colonizes the phloem tissue of the host plant. By disrupting the translocation of photoassimilates throughout the tree, the pathogen severely impairs the physiological functions of the olive tree, eventually leading to systemic decline.

The primary host for this pathogen is the European olive (Olea europaea). In commercial olive cultivation, the disease poses a significant economic risk as it affects the tree's vigor and fruit-bearing capacity, often leading to the eventual death of severely infected individuals.

The characteristic symptoms include a bright yellow discoloration of the leaves, which typically starts at the tips or margins. Affected branches exhibit stunted growth with shortened internodes, giving the canopy a bushy or witches' broom appearance. Over time, the tree displays significant foliage loss and reduced fruit quality.

The spread of Olive yellows is facilitated by insect vectors, particularly leafhoppers and planthoppers, which acquire the phytoplasma while feeding on infected trees and transmit it to healthy ones. Environmental conditions that favor the proliferation of these insect populations significantly increase the risk of disease outbreaks.

Effective management strategies rely on integrated pest management practices. This includes the systematic removal and destruction of infected trees to serve as inoculum reservoirs, the application of insecticides to control insect vectors, and the utilization of certified, pathogen-free nursery stock for new plantings.
